Question with Email Subscription

Hi,

I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Reporting Services and try to make some subscription. The strange thing is that after I clicked "New Subscription" in the Reporting Manager and Report Delivery Option only shows the option "Report Server File Share" .I cannot select email subscription. Did I miss something out here?

THanks for the help

Josh

Hi Josh,

sure that you have configured the mail-settings using the RS-Frontend?

Question related to Reporting Services vs Crystal Report

I am migrating my reports from crystal 8 to reporting services 2005 but before this my client wants answers of following question. Can anybody provide me answer or link related to mentioned question...

1 -Will there be any performance improvement when the same Report (considering big data) is being run with Sql-Server reporting services compared to the one with Crystal report engine?

2- Is it possible to make the labels which are part of Top Palette like “1 of 1”, “Find”, “Next”, “Select a format”, ‘Export” according to the Account language?

3- Can both Versions of Reporting Tools (SQL-Reporting service and Crystal Report) run on the same machine?

4- What are the limitations of this Tools like whether there are any additional load on Database Server because of the involvement of Reporting services which are installed on DB Server.

5- Whether there are additional (to Crystal Report) types of Graph formats, Export file types available?

6- How is the licensing done for SQL-Server Report services?

Please provide me the answers ASAP.

This link might help. It is a white sheet on migrating from CR to RS... http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinfo/whitepapers/migrate-crystal-to-reporting-services.mspx

We have CR and RS on the same machine and there were no problems.

Hope this helps.

Question regarding calculated fields in reporting services 2005

Is there a concept of scope for calculated fields? I tried the
following and VS crashed.
=IIf(RowNumber("GroupName") = 1, MyValue, 0)
Example of what I am trying to accomplish.
GroupID, MyValue
1, 5
1, 5
1, 5
2, 10
3, 20
3, 20
========== Average MyValue should be (5 + 10 + 20)/3...not (5+5+5+10+20+20)/5.
MyValue would be the same for each GroupID. Does this make sense?Hi,
Infact you can use "Avg()" itself it has a scope parameter.

question on training providers in Nj/NY area

Does anyone know of training orgs that offer reporting services training? I was given a brief overview, but want a more advanced class.
For those who are using this tool, Is there ad-hoc user reporting? how would you compare this tool to others, like Cognos, etc
any thoughts on this tool would helpful. we currently use crstal reports, but looking for something more sophisticated
bevfor the add-hoc report part in your question it will be supported in reporting service 2005 see the following link
http://www.devx.com/dbzone/Article/28047?trk=DXRSS_DB
if you arelooking for something more sophisticated the answer it is not the reporting service as it is simple , fast and easy to make a report but in the same time it has some limits so u need to knew what do you need exactly?? and choose your tool.|||

I think the level of sophistication is drill downs, etc. Also would be nice to be incorporated in an .net application, either web based or client server. the reporting services seems to have it's own URL, etc

I know cognos is nice, but very pricey. Does anyone have recommendations on similiar report apps? Or if you use cognos, is it worth the price, for the level of reporting, drill down, etc

thanks for any info you may have

bev

|||The SQL Server 2005 version will compare to Cognos but development skills required, with the release of Business Object 11 the SQL Server team is making the development easier because the offerings are similar but Business Object can be used by the executive. One main difference Business Object implemented Time Interval at time span level which will make Time series aggregation easier, I read recently SQL Server 2005 ANSI SQL Time Interval was taken out so fine grain time series aggregation will take more code. Hope this helps.

question on synchronization for Intel Developer Services article

I'm a freelance tech writer working on an article for Intel Developer
Services, Intel's site for sw developers. The article is on writing
applications for use in occasionally connected environments. Intel really
thinks that asynchronous, OC apps make more sense for a slew of mobile
applications.
Here is my question (I'm sorry if it's naive... I'm not a developer): As I
understand it, it's only in SQL for Windows CE that the database can live
locally on the client device, synchronizing to a back end when a connection
becomes available. So building OC solutions across multiple devices is
difficult, because there's little support for the same functionality on PCs
laptops. Is this correct? What are are some tips for developers looking to
build apps that work asynchronously on laptops?
Thanks very much for any help you can provide. I'm looking for comments I
might quote from in my article, but if you prefer not to be quoted, that's
fine, too. I'm also looking just to get smart on this.
Geoff Koch (gkoch AT stanfordalumni DOT org)

Lansing, MichiganIf you are talking about replication then any of the SQL Server editions can
do some form of replication, not just CE. What edition will run on your
mobile device depends on what OS it is running. ADO.net has a lot of
features based around offline datasets and make it relatively easy to build
applications that can work off line and update later. I would suggest you
have a look at www.microsoft.com/sql and browse around in the different
areas that may be of interest to you.

question on synchronization for Intel Developer Services artic

Thanks, Andrew. Can I bounce another, higher level question off you?
The gist of my article is that the tipping point for asynchronous, OC
applications is mobile repair and service personnel. Here's a case study tha
t
the Intel guys like:
http://www.ianywhere.com/success_st...ton_north.html.
The idea generally is that IT infrastructure is already in place in standard
office & enterprise environments. So there's inertia when there's any talk o
f
changing the infrastructure from always-on to sometimes-on, even when there'
s
problems. (For instance, if you're working connected via Wi-Fi to Outlook,
SAP perhaps a CRM program, and then you walk from floor to floor, changing
subnets and walking in and out WiFi hotspots, you'll often get lots of error
messages.) But when the office/white collar-types see the productivity gains
service/maintenance personnel get from working in OC fashion, then the white
collar workers demand the same kind infrastructure, etc., etc.
I guess my questions is, do you buy it? That giving service/maintenance
workers mobile applications that work well with sporadic network connectivit
y
(perhaps wireless, perhaps ethernet, perhaps dial-up) will be the tipping
point to change the way lots of sw is architected?
Thanks,
Geoff

Unfortunately, there is not. There might be a way in Reporting
Services 2008, which is rumored to have better CSS control. Sorry that
I could not be of greater assistance.

Question on passing multi-value parameter for multiple branches

Hello. We are using asp .net and reporting services, and trying to pass a multi-value parameter into reporting services that will show data for multiple branches.

Dim paramList As New Generic.List(Of Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ReportParameter)

paramList.Add(New Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ReportParameter("BranchNumber", 1))

ReportViewer1.ServerReport.SetParameters(paramList)

pInfo = ReportViewer1.ServerReport.GetParameters()

Let me know if you have any suggestions!

Thanks.

Did you try passing "1,2,3,4" instead of "1" ?

Jens K. Suessmeyer

http://www.sqlserver2005.de
|||We tried that also, without any luck.|||

We have already figured out how to move between seperate branches, we just want a corporate option that will show all branches as a whole.

Any ideas?

Thanks

|||There is no way to post the "All" option, you will either have to pass all values to display or use an additional (hidden) parametert which uses the "All" option behind the scenes, something like:

Where SomeVar IN (@.TheValues) OR @.TheMagicParameter = 1 (Where TheMagicParameter is the magic hidden parameter)

Question on packages deployment

Hi, all experts here,

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

I am having a question on the deployment of the packages to integration services server. Why after I have deployed the whole solution, but my packages are not actually deployed to the integration services server?

Also, after we add the package manually to the integration services server, to users outside of local host, how could we add permissions for them to execute the packages?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

Hi Helen999888,

I'm not sure how you are deploying the packages or what you mean when you say "add the package manually". Can you provide some detail about your current procedure?

I like to use the Deployment Utility for deployment. In Solution Explorer, right-click the project name and click Properties. On the Deployment Utility page, set the CreateDeploymentUtility property to True. The next time you build the project, a Deployment subdirectory will be created under the bin directory in the project path. Inside this directory will be at least two files: one for each package in the solution and another named the same as the project with the extension: SSISDeploymentManifest. If you double-click the SSISDeploymentManifest file, the SSIS Deployment Wizard starts and will walk you through deploying the package(s) in your project.

There are many ways to execute SSIS packages:

Manually - in either Business Intelligence Development Studio or using DTExecUI. Command Line - using DtExec. SQL Agent Job - using the SQL Server Integration Services step type.|||

Question on dynamic sorting

Hi,
I am trying to implement dynamic sorting using Reporting Services. I have 3
dropdowns on a page which contain the list of fields returned by a
stored procedure. What I am doing is creating the <Sorting> tag and its
children dynamically based on the sort the user selected. Then I am loading
the report definition (.rdl) into an Xml doc and I am adding the dynamically
created <Sorting> string to the doc at the appropriate location in the
document as if I had added sorting to the report using the Visual Studio IDE.
Then I turn the Xml doc into Byte[] and I am using this updated Byte[] array
to update the report definition. The problem is when I render the report
using the Render method, sorting does not take place as if the original .rdl
is used instead of the one I updated? Is there a way to dynamically deploy
the updated report definition? Is caching the culprit? Am I missing a step?
Is there a simpler way to implement dynamic sorting using RS?
Thanks muchyou could use the parameter "value" to drive the sorting for your table or
list. Under the sort properties, use =Fields(Parameters!SortBy.Value).Value
to have dynamic sorting.

Question on calculated members

Hi, all experts,

As we know the calculated members are only calculated at query time which means the analysis services engine wont preaggregate any thing for calculated members across different levels of dimensions? I am a bit confused then what is the point to have a calculated member in a cube especially if the cube is a large cube with over millions records of data? In this case, the query including any calculated members against the cube with millions of records will be extremly slow?

I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly for your kind advices and thanks a lot in advance.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

You are right that calculated members are evaluated at query time. While a cube may contain millions of records of data, a given query may be answered by using a small portion of the data. Therefore, a calculated member may be calculated pretty fast if the query space is much smaller than the entire cube.|||

Dear Helen,

You are right, but you could use named calculations in the datasourceview at the each row nivel... you dont agregations and is better for performnace.

Calculated members is important to use in the cube, aggregations nivel...

Question on an unuall issue in SQL reporting Service

There is a developer here running a report using SQL reporting services, It
is a fairly large report and it seems to run fine, But when he tries to
export it to a CSV or EXCEL, it runs for two minutes then brings up an
authentication window, After he inputs his credentials it runs approx another
two minutes then wants him to re-authenticate, after the third instance of
this it fails and will not export. However if he tries to export a smaller
file, it works Okay. One caviat, I recieve an Event ID:10016 around the same
time and it says something about The COM not having a required permission, is
this a factor in my issue?

It sounds like it. Normally, once a datasource has been set up for a
report, there is no further authentication necessary. Also, I myself
have never seen this occur when exporting to any format w/Reporting
Services (and I don't utilize COM objects in the process).
